The final cut, made just outside the branch bark collar. Note the bark ridge as well. A cut that is made flush against the trunk will leave a large wound and decrease the tree’s ability to compartmentalize damage. On the other hand, a large stub is unattractive and also limits the natural compartmentalization of decay.
